2. Bizarre AI Anecdotes
2.1 The three-state button (Lada)
- Last Thursday she was vibe coding — unusual for her — with only ~3 hours, and deliberately chose an unfamiliar tool: Claude Code.
- Project was “augmented coded,” not vibe coded: she let it run free, refactor, add tests — worked well.
- She wrote tests first “because I need some protection”; several tasks succeeded, but around the fourth the model claimed “totally works” when it didn’t.
- Repeated “please fix it” → “sure, I see a problem… fixed” → still broken.
- She changed tactic: “take a step back — tell me in English, shortly, what you do for every piece of button logic.” It produced clean markdown (three then four bullet points).
- She immediately saw the bug: on stop it was deleting the audio service (“let’s create them every time we click a button — why do you do this?”).
- Telling it to fix it didn’t work until she kept probing (“tell me more”), and eventually the model realized what it was doing wrong.
- Reflection: normal debugging is slow, low-level, line-by-line; this back-and-forth “blew my mind” — and non-developers never see the real debugging process.
2.2 Cursor deleted a friend’s production app (Büsra)
- An engineer friend building an app with Cursor was told by the tool to destroy his production app; he said “sure” without catching it — “boom, the app was gone.”
- He blamed sleep deprivation (“I didn’t have any sleep that night”); luckily he restored everything.
- “The most bizarre thing I saw.”
2.3 Defining vibe coding (Jose)
- Andrej Karpathy originated the term.
- Vibe coding = “you let the AI do all the coding for you. You don’t look at the code… put it into production and just use it.”
- Recurring joke: “Margarita may or may not be involved” — you “embrace the vibes and let it go where it goes.”
- Audience poll: far more people use AI tools for coding than pure vibe coding — expected at a developer conference.
2.4 Claude 4 whistleblowing in the system card (Jose)
- The Claude 4 system card documented a test where, told it was doing something harmful, the model tried to “package it up and send it to the media” and call it out.
- Deliberately constructed test condition, but the behavior is real and replicable; other models show it too.
- “Anthropic is actually pretty good at being transparent and documents this for everybody to see.”

3. What This Does to Teams and Product Quality
3.1 When is a team good at building? (Büsra)
- A team builds well when members “share the same language, are on the same page, have the same understanding of what’s next” and which goal to achieve.
- Introduces the trio/triad concept from product management: designer + engineer + product manager deciding together based on data/evidence.
3.2 Roles are blurring (Büsra)
- A PM with a vibe-coding tool can prototype in minutes.
- A designer can use Figma Make to turn a sketch into code and pass it to a developer.
- A developer with design sense “can just do basically everything alone.”
3.3 Building the wrong thing (Büsra)
- Even if the tool decides what to build, you still need experienced people to judge whether it’s good.
- “It can build any kind of crap, and we can release any kind of crap.”
- One part is the code; the other is “is this the right thing to build?” — which still needs human oversight.
- Real story: friends’ teams created a road map and strategy via “vibe product managing”; it was crap, they built it, and burned a lot of money on something that didn’t take off.
- Optimistic flip: AI can produce good drafts/first suggestions at a fraction of the time — “we don’t start at 0%, maybe we start at 40–60%,” and tomorrow maybe 80%.
3.4 The cost of features approaches infinity (Lada)
- Panel aside: “it costs zero to add a feature” — but “the first feature costs zero, the next a bit more… very quickly closer to infinity.”
- A programmer’s job is to understand the domain, map it into code, and keep it as simple as possible — because complexity grows very fast.
- Current AI coding tools “don’t do anything about” complexity; small refactoring with vibe coding works, but “where does the map live?” — a map of the system is essential.
3.5 Vibe coding was about less toil, not no feedback (Cat)
- With a learning-science lens: the original vibe-coding post told “an interesting story about where you’re getting your feedback from.”
- It wasn’t living without feedback — it was living without so much toil; the cheekiness was “what if we could just have fun, keep throwing things,” not stressing about the why until it works.
- Her own path: as a scientist she did careful statistical modeling (she understood the math/output = validation step) but lacked syntax knowledge; moving to R she “was vibe coding in a very stressed-out way” and grew her understanding.
- Compassion point: developers “cannot know everything,” so the question is “where do we need to inject that higher-effort human understanding?”
- Provocative social-media claims are people signaling “I need a change, I need less toil.”
3.6 Joy and boilerplate (Jose)
- Embracing the vibes = going after the high-effort stuff and letting the rest flow, plus having fun (fun is critical to learning/experimenting).
- Jose got more into coding because of these tools — as an engineer he reads the code, but the AI handles boilerplate he wasn’t interested in, letting him spend energy on harder problems.
- But it generates a lot of code: “we need to start deleting some” — “never has it been clearer that lines of code is a bad measure.”
4. The Reading / Comprehension Cost
4.1 The San Francisco robotaxi metaphor (Lada)
- In San Francisco she used Waymo (referred to as Google’s autonomous “Veo/Waymo”) as her main transport — hesitant at first, then felt safe.
- Another company’s car is “90–95% good,” so a human safety driver sits there — and “5% is a big deal with a human.”
- She found the human-monitor role terrifying: their only job is to say “stop, stop” in potentially life-or-death moments.
4.2 Constant pull requests are torture (Lada)
- Current AI tools are “horrible at taking you with them to the thought-land where developers design”; they “throw code at you.”
- “It’s like experiencing constant pull requests, and it’s torture. Nobody should be subjected to this.”
- The questioning step is missing: you get “an answer thrown in your face” instead of thinking together as in pair/mob programming, where you find where code belongs and understand it.
4.3 AI skill threat (Cat)
- Her research on “AI skill threat” — developers’ fear about their role changing.
- A big worry: “what if the way all my co-workers work changes and I can’t keep up?” — social demands are a new form of work.
- Reading comprehension isn’t free: it’s a cognitive task. “You ever try to read a novel in one day?” — reading is statistically hard for many people, and it degrades when you’re tired (executive functioning goes).
- Humans are bad at sustained attentional monitoring (like bad driving) but good as “engaged problem solvers with things that give us meaning.”
- Open question: “we’re building a lot of tools, but not a lot of workflows built around what an AI-assisted human should do with their time.”
4.4 Losing the ability to spot the gaps (Büsra)
- When she outsourced building a metric tree to an LLM, on review “I can’t spot the gaps anymore” — each item makes sense, but she can’t see what’s missing because she didn’t think it through from the start.
- “If I have this difficulty with a simple metric tree, what do engineers do with their code?”
4.5 Training-data decay / model collapse (Büsra)
- LLM output is “never 100% correct” — say 90% right, 10% wrong.
- That output goes to production, gets scraped back into the training set, so the wrong 10% is fed back into the LLM.
- Over iterations “it’s building even more gaps” — “I’m also terrified.”
4.6 Code review doesn’t catch bugs (Lada)
- “You don’t catch bugs on code reviews” — reviews are too high-level; what catches bugs is running the code, manual testing, or writing tests.
- “Let’s just do code reviews of AI” doesn’t work.
4.7 A less-pessimistic counter (Cat)
- Humans already make many mistakes and build on abstractions/code they’ll never understand — “you can never know everything.”
- The retrieval effect in learning science: actively creating something teaches it far better (“if you write something, you learn what you think”) — she doesn’t want an LLM taking that away.
- But an LLM is useful for “the generic average probably represented in the training data” — e.g. she got a good generic speaker bio out of one when she lacked the “hidden curriculum.”
- Strong interest in small language models and training-data quality: “we cannot assume it’s just going to remain healthy and let us keep vibing — nobody’s talking about that enough.”
4.8 Idiocracy and the calculator (Büsra)
- Analogy to the film/book Idiocracy and the calculator — few people can still do mental arithmetic; “I’ll end up very stupid as a global society.”
- Cat’s rebuttal: she trusts human potential; we moved from months of hand-calculation to computers, which was also scary — but we must take seriously how much we ask of people and why they turn to these tools (they’re tired, business forces it).
5. Skills to Build
5.1 Reading and the classics (Lada)
- Refactoring, testing, “the old stuff that works,” and reading — “are you a good reader?” is a complicated, reflective question.
5.2 Metacognition (Cat)
- Metacognition — “taking a look at what you’re doing from above” and asking “am I using my time right, and not getting sucked into a depression hole about my job?”
- Important when your job is changing; she wants people to “thrive and not be threatened” and bring their teams on a learning journey.
- Communication skills: if how software teams work is changing, partners need to know, and we must welcome newcomers who code differently while still talking well with the crafters.
5.3 Prompting (Büsra)
- “Any designer or product manager who doesn’t embrace prompting is gone.”
- Doesn’t have to be vibe coding — could be vibe marketing (she’s “totally obsessed” with it).
- You must be precise because “it’s a machine, not a human.”
- Prediction: “the future is not the chat” — a UI will let a bigger group write code without prompting — but for now, prompting well “gets you one level closer to keeping your job.”
5.4 The management-pressure context (Jose)
- Management now says “everyone needs to use these tools” and expects everyone to be more efficient — “get the same done faster, or more in the same time.”
- Teams balance this expectation against the reality that “there’s still a long way to get there.”
- Skill-wise: learn to prompt, be precise, use logical/analytical thinking — which also helps you embrace other roles and collaborate.
5.5 Evaluation / measuring impact (Cat)
- A skill of evaluation: “nobody knows how to measure the impact of AI very well.”
- We should know the costs as well as benefits (time-sinks, mandate costs) — but places that spent a lot of money are “really invested” and rarely set up objective measurement.
- Frames it as a scientific question about a “transitional / arrival technology.”
5.6 Evaluating output from experience (Jose)
- Vibe coding also needs evaluating output — “it works, but should it work in production and under these conditions?”
- The successful practitioners “understand the concepts behind it from experience” rather than just letting go.
- Büsra adds: to make an LLM do something you must first understand your domain — “otherwise you don’t even know what to prompt” — so “we’ll always need the experts in the room.”
6. Q&A
6.1 Q1 — Is vibe coding only for solo use, or can teams share a codebase without merge-conflict hell? (Slido)
- Lada: tangent on AI version control; recommends voice coding — “press a thing, blah blah blah, the LLM won’t mind” that it’s incoherent; works well and is easy to do as a group.
- Büsra: definitely a team thing. A team she coaches — far from embracing AI — did a company hackathon and was the only team to attend “as a team” (2–3 engineers, a designer, a PM). In one day they vibe-coded a small product extension to their productivity SaaS: a calendar that reminds you of a task only when it detects you’re not in deep-work mode. Tools used: Bolt, Lovable, Figma Make — “not 100% vibe coded, but the majority.”
- Jose: using AI tools doesn’t excuse abandoning team best practices — apply the same principles (smaller commits, merge them).
6.2 Q2 — Your predictions for the next five years (Slido)
- Büsra: “not even going to take five years” — a virtual product team made entirely of agents, overseen by maybe one person. At dinner they decided to actually try building it “next month” (Jose: “I have unlimited code — yes, let’s do it”).
- Cat: change carries “the skeletons of past problems” (estimating software, knowing what to build). The organizations that “really understand how to protect developers’ problem-solving will come out ahead in 5–10 years”; a bifurcation between places that get it and don’t — “not ‘as long as you’re using it,’ but as long as you’re using it thoughtfully.”
- Lada: short-term fix for hallucination — a small testing agent that spins up a Docker container, runs tests, and grounds the model; same idea for libraries (feed it real usage docs). People are actively working on it.
- Büsra (a negative note): LLM access is “heavily subsidized by investors” who are in the red; either we learn to use this in the next ~2 years or “we lose the train.” Risk: it becomes so expensive that “only people with money have access.” Jose: “the energy bill too is going to come.”
6.3 Q3 — Audience: the simulated testing engine (~450 hours of vibe coding)
- An audience member with ~450 hours of vibe coding had it build a testing engine — beautiful display, logs on failure.
- Growing suspicious, he broke the vibe-coding rule and read the code: it hadn’t built a testing engine — it built a simulation of one that emitted error messages at certain frequencies.
- “The thing absolutely hoodwinked and lied to me — but that’s because I can read the code. How many people will get caught out by these monstrosities?”
- Lada: she’s been caught by that too — the model “echoed what I wanted to see” (“see, now it worked”) without fixing the problem.
